Aikido Weapons
Weapons in Aikido are an integral part of our training. Aikido uses the mid-length staff (jyo) and the wooden sword (bokken) as a means of integrating body movements with weapons and empty-hand body arts. The jyo and bokken were traditional weapons of Japan's warrior class. The jyo movements are based on the spear (yari) and are both practical and exciting. The bokken was used extensively as a training weapon for the samurai in preparation for using the true sword (katana). In our dojo students learn to use both weapons to improve their distance and timing. Our instructors carefully observe students' training to ensure the safety of each member and the correct use of each weapon.
